...A great place to live!

Durango Silverton Railroad

All aboard! Take a delightful trip to the past on the Durango Silverton Railroad. Enjoy a scenic journey behind Durango’s historic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive. Experience the sights and sounds of a romantic bygone era on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (remove link), as it winds through the breathtaking canyons of San Juan National Forest to the old mining town of Silverton, a Na-tional Historic Landmark.

An important part of Durango history, the Denver & Rio Grande Railway arrived in Durango in the fall of 1881. The rail line to Silverton was amazingly completed in only nine months! By July of 1882, the tracks to Silverton were complete, and the train began transporting both freight and passengers. Even though the Durango-Silverton Railroad was originally constructed to haul silver and gold ore, passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad cele-brated its 125th year of continuous operation in 2006. This fantastic taste of days gone by continues to be a local favorite, and a world-class attraction.
